SAPPERFEST 2024 T-SHIRT – 80th D-Day Anniversary
On 5th June 1944 20 Sappers from 249 Field Company (Airborne) RE played a pivotal role in the first operation on D-Day.
Their mission order was “to take intact the two bridges over the Orne River and the Caen Canal, at Bénouville and Ranville… The capture of these two bridges, which was to be known as “Operation Coup de Main”, relied essentially on the effect of surprise, speed of execution and determination to win.
Using Horsa Gliders as transport they totally surprised the Germans who had no time to place any charges on the bridge
Now known as “Pegasus Bridge” the front of the shirt depicts the landing of the gliders at Pegasus Bridge and is a tribute to those Sappers that took part on the first operation on D-Day.
The back of the shirt is the statue of 3 soldiers from the recently completed British Normandy Memorial that Sapper Harry Billinge helped to raise money for in memory of his fallen comrades.
